What is JEE Advanced?

The Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) is India’s most prestigious engineering entrance examination. It serves as the gateway to undergraduate programs at all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), including B.Tech, B.Sc., B.Arch., and integrated dual-degree programs.

JEE Advanced is the second stage of the IIT admission process. Only students who clear the JEE Main cutoff and rank among the top 250,000 candidates are eligible to sit for it. The exam is conducted by one of seven zonal IITs on a rotational basis, under the oversight of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). For 2026, IIT Roorkee is the organizing institute.

What makes JEE Advanced uniquely challenging is its unpredictable exam pattern. Unlike most national entrance tests, the number of questions, total marks, and marking scheme change every year. This is to test not just knowledge, but adaptability, speed, and deep analytical thinking across physics, chemistry, and mathematics.

Did you know?

Prestigious institutions like the University of Cambridge and the National University of Singapore also accept JEE Advanced scores for their undergraduate admissions.

JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern

The JEE Advanced exam pattern changes every year and is not fully disclosed before the exam. Based on past papers, here is what candidates can expect:

JEE Advanced Papers
Paper 1 (Morning) Paper 2 (Afternoon)
• 3 hrs
• MCQs + Numerical
• Negative marking
• 3 hrs
• Paragraph + Matching
Both papers compulsory

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility

Before registering, candidates must fulfil all of the following eligibility conditions. Failing even one can lead to the cancellation of candidature.

  • JEE Main Performance: Must rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories) in the JEE Main 2026 BE/BTech Paper.
  • Age Limit: Born on or after October 1, 2001. SC, ST, and PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation (born on or after October 1, 1996).
  • Class 12 Qualification: Must have appeared in or passed Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
  • Number of Attempts: A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years only.
  • No Prior IIT Admission: Candidates who have previously been admitted to any IIT (or accepted an IIT seat before withdrawing) are NOT eligible.

Foreign Nationals: Exempt from qualifying JEE Main; can apply directly under the supernumerary quota.

Not eligible if: You appeared for Class 12 for the first time before 2025, or have already exhausted two JEE Advanced attempts, or are currently enrolled at any IIT.

JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff (Expected)

The JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff refers to the minimum marks required to qualify for rank listing and become eligible for IIT admissions through JoSAA counselling. While the official cutoff will only be released after the exam results, we can estimate the expected cutoff for 2026 based on trends from previous years.

Students searching for the JEE Advanced 2026 expected cutoff, minimum qualifying marks, and category-wise cutoff will find the latest estimates and trends here.

The cutoff varies every year depending on:

  • Exam difficulty level
  • Number of candidates
  • Overall performance of students
  • Seat availability across IITs

Expected JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff (Category-wise)

Category Expected Qualifying Marks
(Out of 360)
Expected Percentile
General (OPEN) 85 – 95 35% – 40%
OBC-NCL 75 – 85 30% – 35%
EWS 75 – 85 30% – 35%
SC 45 – 55 18% – 22%
ST 45 – 55 18% – 22%
PwD 45 – 55 18% – 22%

*Disclaimer: These are expected cutoffs based on previous years’ trends. The actual cutoff may be higher or lower depending on the paper difficulty and overall performance in JEE Advanced 2026.

JEE Advanced Cutoff vs IIT Admission Cutoff

Many students confuse the qualifying cutoff with the IIT branch cutoff. They’re totally different:

  • Qualifying Cutoff
Minimum marks needed to be included in the JEE Advanced rank list.
  • IIT Admission Cutoff (Closing Ranks)
Rank required to get a specific IIT + branch during JoSAA counselling.
    For example:
    • IIT Bombay CSE: Top ~100 ranks
    • Newer IIT branches: May go beyond 10,000 rank

So even if you clear the cutoff, your rank decides your IIT and branch.

Previous Year JEE Advanced Cutoff Trends (For Reference)

Here’s a quick look at recent qualifying cutoffs to help you understand the pattern:

Year General OBC-NCL EWS SC ST
2024 ~86 ~78 ~78 ~46 ~46
2023 ~86 ~78 ~78 ~44 ~44
2022 ~88 ~79 ~79 ~43 ~43

Cutoffs usually stay within a ±5 mark range unless the paper is unusually tough or easy.

How Much Should You Target for a Safe Score in 2026?

Instead of aiming just for the cutoff, target a buffer score:

  • Top 5,000 Rank Target → 140+ marks
  • Decent IIT Branch → 110+ marks
  • Just qualifying → 90+ marks

The higher your score, the more choices you’ll have in IITs and branches.

JEE Advanced 2026 Preparation Tips

The JEE Advanced consistently ranks among the world’s toughest exams. The difference between a good rank and a great rank often comes down to strategy, consistency, and mental resilience.

  • Focus on NCERT First
Build rock-solid conceptual foundations before moving to advanced references.
  • Solve Previous Year Papers
JEE Advanced papers from the last 10 years are the single best preparation resource. Solve them under timed conditions to build speed, accuracy, and exam temperament.
  • Build a Consistent Study Schedule
Consistency outperforms intensity. Plan subject-wise daily targets, allocate dedicated revision slots, and stick to the schedule even on difficult days.
  • Take Full-Length Mock Tests Weekly

Simulate exam conditions: same timing, no distractions. Review every mistake thoroughly because error analysis is where the real learning happens.

  • Prioritize High-Weightage Chapters

In physics, focus on mechanics and electromagnetism. In chemistry, organic and physical chemistry dominate. In math, calculus and coordinate geometry are consistently tested.

  • Protect Your Health and Mindset

Adequate sleep (7–8 hours), light exercise, and regular short breaks are performance essentials, not luxuries. Stay positive and manage stress proactively.
