ACCA Qualification 2027: New Structure, Key Changes & What Students Need to Know

ACCA is introducing a new qualification structure from 2027. The updated qualification will have fewer exams, new employability modules, and more focus on technology, sustainability, and practical business skills.

If you’re planning to study ACCA or you’re already registered, it’s worth knowing how these changes may affect you. Understanding what has changed, when the changes take effect, and how they affect your studies can help you make informed decisions before registering or planning your next exam.

Why Is ACCA Changing Its Qualification?

The finance and accounting profession has changed a lot in recent years. Today’s accountants do much more than prepare financial reports or manage tax compliance. Many roles now involve analysing business data, supporting business decisions, using digital tools, and understanding sustainability reporting.

To keep up with these changes, ACCA has updated its qualification after consulting employers, members, learning providers, and students from around the world. The aim is to make the qualification more relevant to today’s workplace while continuing to strengthen the strong technical knowledge that ACCA is known for. The qualification itself isn’t being replaced. Instead, ACCA is updating the current structure. Students will still study the core accounting and finance subjects, but the course content and exam structure have been updated to match the skills employers are looking for today.

What Exactly Is Changing in the ACCA Qualification 2027?

The updated ACCA Qualification introduces several changes to both the qualification structure and the way students learn throughout the course.

New Qualification Structure

From 2027, the ACCA Qualification will follow three main levels:

  • Knowledge
  • Expertise
  • Strategic Professional

Students who meet ACCA’s entry requirements will begin at the Knowledge level, just as they do today. Students who don’t meet the minimum entry requirements can start through the Foundations route, which provides an entry option into the main ACCA Qualification.

One noticeable change is that the current Applied Skills level will be renamed the Expertise level. While the name is changing, the level continues to develop the practical accounting and finance skills needed before progressing to Strategic Professional.

The Number of Exams Is Reducing

One of the biggest ACCA Qualification Changes is the reduction in the total number of exams. The current qualification requires students to complete 13 exams, while the Future ACCA Qualification reduces this to 11 exams.

This change happens at the Strategic Professional level. Under the current structure, students complete two compulsory papers and choose two optional papers. From 2027, students will complete two compulsory papers and only one optional paper, reducing the overall number of exams by two.

The two compulsory papers are:

  • Business and Sustainability Reporting (S1)
  • Strategic Business Leader (S2)

Students will then choose one specialist paper from the available Strategic Professional options based on their career interests.

Although there are fewer exams, the qualification is not designed to be easier. ACCA has combined learning outcomes and redesigned assessments so students develop broader technical and professional skills throughout the qualification.

Essential Employability Modules Replace EPSM

Another major change is the replacement of the current Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM). Instead of completing a single ethics module during the qualification, students will complete Essential Employability Modules (EEMs) at different stages of their ACCA journey. These modules become a compulsory part of the qualification and must be completed before progressing to the next level.

Each module focuses on the skills expected in today’s workplace, alongside technical accounting knowledge.

The modules include:

Qualification Level Essential Employability Module
Knowledge Responsible Business Management
Expertise Digital Tech and Innovation
Strategic Professional Ethical, Sustainable Leadership

This approach integrates professional and workplace skill development throughout the qualification instead of leaving it until the later stages.

A New Strategic Professional Option

The Strategic Professional level also introduces a new specialist option called Data Science Professional (SDS). This paper recognises the growing role of data analytics in finance and gives students another specialisation to choose from alongside existing options such as Audit, Corporate Finance, Taxation, and Performance.

Students will now complete one option paper instead of two, allowing them to develop expertise in an area that best matches their career goals.

Sustainability Is No Longer a Separate Topic

Businesses are increasingly expected to report not only on financial performance but also on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters. The ACCA Qualification 2027 gives greater attention to sustainability across different levels of the qualification. Students will learn how sustainability affects financial reporting, business strategy, risk management, and long-term decision-making.

Instead of treating sustainability as a niche subject, ACCA has integrated it into areas where finance professionals are likely to apply it in practice.

Current ACCA vs Future ACCA Qualification

The table below highlights the main differences between the current qualification and the new structure.

Current ACCA Qualification Future ACCA Qualification (2027)
13 exams 11 exams
Applied Skills level Expertise level
Strategic Professional: 2 compulsory + 2 optional papers Strategic Professional: 2 compulsory + 1 optional paper
Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) Essential Employability Modules (EEMs) at each stage
Limited focus on digital skills across subjects Greater integration of AI, technology, data, and sustainability throughout the qualification
Existing Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) route Updated Foundations route leading into the ACCA Qualification

It’s important to remember that the purpose of these changes isn’t to make ACCA shorter or easier. The qualification is being redesigned to align with how the accounting profession has changed. While students will take fewer exams, they’ll also be expected to develop a wider range of technical, analytical, and professional skills throughout their studies.

Should You Start ACCA Before or After 2027?

If you’re planning to study ACCA, there’s no need to postpone your decision because of the qualification changes. ACCA has confirmed that students who start under the current qualification will transition to the new structure through an official mapping process. This means the exams you complete before the changes take effect will continue to count towards your qualification.

Based on ACCA’s current transition arrangements, waiting until 2027 does not appear to provide a clear advantage for most students. Starting earlier allows you to progress with your studies, and your completed papers will be recognised when the new qualification is introduced. The best time to start ACCA depends more on your career plans, eligibility, and study schedule than on the qualification update itself.

Already Studying ACCA? Here's What Changes for Existing Students

The ACCA Qualification Changes are designed to support existing students rather than interrupt their progress. If you’ve already passed ACCA exams, you won’t need to start again. ACCA will use a transition framework to map completed papers to the new qualification structure. Students with exemptions will also receive guidance on how their exemptions apply under the updated qualification.

To make the transition easier, ACCA has also introduced an online Transition Tool. By entering your current progress, you can see how it will carry over to the Future ACCA Qualification and which exams or modules you’ll still need to complete. If you’re already studying ACCA, the recommended approach is to continue with your planned exams instead of waiting for the new qualification.

When Will the ACCA Qualification 2027 Changes Begin?

The changes will be introduced gradually in different stages, giving students and learning providers enough time to understand the updates and adjust to the new qualification structure instead of having all changes introduced at the same time.

What Do These Changes Mean for Your Career?

The redesigned ACCA Qualification doesn’t change its global recognition. Employers will continue to value ACCA members for their accounting and finance expertise. For students looking to understand the qualification in detail, exploring the ACCA Course Details can provide a clear overview of the structure, eligibility, exams, and career opportunities.

What changes is how those skills are developed. The updated qualification includes more focus on areas that are becoming increasingly important in finance roles, such as digital tools, data analysis, ethical decision-making, and sustainability. Students will learn how these areas connect with their accounting studies and how they are used in modern finance teams, while continuing to develop the technical knowledge ACCA is recognised for.

For students, this means completing the same respected qualification while gaining skills that are becoming more relevant in today’s workplace.

FAQ's

Is ACCA still worth studying after the 2027 qualification changes?

Yes. ACCA remains one of the world’s most recognised accounting qualifications. The 2027 changes update the existing qualification by adding skills that are becoming more important in today’s finance profession, such as technology, sustainability, and professional judgement.

Will my existing ACCA papers remain valid after 2027?

Yes. ACCA has confirmed that completed exams will transfer to the new qualification through its official transition framework, so existing students won’t lose the progress they’ve already made.

What happens if I have already completed the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) before 2027?

ACCA has confirmed that students who complete EPSM prior to the transition will receive credit and will not need to complete the Strategic Professional Essential Employability Module.

Will ACCA exemptions change under the new qualification?

ACCA has confirmed that exemptions will continue under the redesigned qualification. Updated exemption guidance will be provided as the transition progresses to help students understand how their previous qualifications map to the new structure.

Will employers prefer the new ACCA Qualification?

The value of ACCA comes from the qualification itself, not the version a student completes. Employers will continue to recognise both the current and updated qualification. The changes are focused on ensuring that ACCA aligns with the skills and knowledge needed in today’s accounting and finance roles.
