National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) may witness a change in its pattern, with a two stage examination format and a Computer -Based test (CBT) are being considered as a better replacement for the existing pen and paper format from NEET 2027 onwards, to make the examination more secure and efficient as per the landmark affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court of India by the Union Government for hearing on petitions related to the NEET UG examination reforms. However, it is important to note that no final decision has been taken, and the government has said that any change in the exam format will depend on further recommendations from a high-level task expert committee led by Nandan Nilekani.
WHY NEET UG 2027 SHOULD BE REVISED?
The recommendation to change the exam pattern arose after the recent issues surrounding the paper leak of NEET 2026, which indicated a lack of a structured examination-conducting system capable of ensuring the security of India’s largest entrance examination. The expert panel believes that the transition of NEET UG to a Computer-Based Test helps students with typing comfort, instant saved responses, and the elimination of OMR sheet filling errors, which sum up to a huge stress reduction with a promised smooth transition; along with that, it reduces malpractices and increases examination transparency, which results in:

- Enhanced examination security
- Faster evaluation and result publishing
Also, the stakeholders are seriously examining whether NEET-UG should remain a single-shot exam or evolve into a two-tier exam (Main + Advanced), much like the engineering exam JEE. This is because the current single-exam format creates pressure on a student’s performance. Instead, a two-stage system provides multiple opportunities to demonstrate ability and a consistent performance over time rather than allowing one particular day to determine a student’s entire future.
